a very foggy/misty scene

Post by budgetguy »

to avoid going all-digital on a battle scene in my film, im going to have a large battle on a field, but have it very foggy so only the closest people can be seen. Does anyone know how im going to get that much fog onto a field? even with the best equipment i would imagine that it would all disperse. maybe if i tried filming inside?

hmmm, where do you live? whats your time constraints? Could you maybe put it on hold untill you have a foggy day?

Yeah thats about your only option. The only other half baked idea I can come up with is to use some really big white smoke bombs on a not so windy day and letting it disperse a little to look more like fog.

Well what I would do is take the area you are going to use, and get some big smoke mashenes, are lots of buckets dry ice and fans, and figure out what collor your fog is going to be. then take some reflecters that match the fog and put them around the area you are in, turn on the fog and hopefuly it will bounce back from the reflectors, which will blend in. Try and shot on an overcast day, but if sunny you can fix that in post with filters.

Do it like they did in 'The Others'. The used a lot of masks alpha channels and layered the scenes to look foggy and 'misty'. Came out awesome! If you've got the double DVD set , watch the 2nd disc about and all the special fx.

They've gotten a little cheaper too. Depending on what kind it is the fog should last for a long time. They've worked well for me in the past so mess around with one and see how it works for you.

cool ideas, just 3 questions about fog machines:
1. what is the best model for the best price?
2. are they good enough to fill an entire room with fog?
3. will the fog have any effect on wallpaper/room or any effects on the health of people breathing it?
thanks

1. Two of them from K-mart for $20 each will be as good as a $200 one from a party shop.
2. Yes.
3. No, concerning that you use it properly.

Well, post production fogs will never have the correct depth around actors as it would in real life.

Don't do in post what you can do in production.

Well he needs to just make animated fetures and skip filmming since his actors already act as stiff as cartoons.
