As Close as it gets to blank-firing guns
As Close as it gets to blanks
READ ALL OF THIS OR YOUR MOVIE WON'T LOOK AS GOOD AS IT SHOULD
This tutorial will show you the best way to making nearly perfect gunshots in Premiere 6.0 or higher.
REQUIRMENTS
1. PhotoShop
2. (duh) Premiere 6.0 or higher
3. (for me PhotoImpact 8, but you don't need)
4. some smoke and bullet casing stock footage
STEP #1 (in Premiere)
Watch the person's trigger finger, at the exact moment he pulls the trigger...
*Export the frame
*Export the VERY next frame
STEP #2 (in PhotoShop)
Open PhotoShop, once inside...
*Draw white muzzle flash
*Add 40% noise to your white muzzle flash (make sure monochromatic is checked)
*Add either 10 or 15 gaussian blur
*Use smudge tool to spike the flash a bit
*Create duplicate layer of your off-white flash, then check off visibility of one layer
*For the checked layer, go to IMAGE>ADJUSTMENTS>HUE/SATURATION, or just press Ctrl+u
*Inside HUE/SATURATION, select COLORIZE and set Hue to 25, set Saturation to 60
*Re-select visibility on the other layer
*Select Color Dodge
*Save your new flash
*Re-open your newly made flash
*Use Smudge tool to smudge flash into new one, repeat as needed
As for the Exported frames...
*Open your exported frames (do 2 at a time to make sure it's right)
*On 1st frame, Use Dodge tool to brighten surrounding areas, save it
*On your 2nd frame, (if pistol) cut out the slide and move it back a bit, save it
STEP #3 (in Premiere)
*Import your edited frames into Premiere
*Set each one of their duration's to 1 frame
*Put each one in place of their originals
*Import smoke and flying bullet casing stock footage
*Use Transparency and Motion tools to place footage in right place with the gunshot, for best results, set THRESHOLD to 81 and set CUTOFF to 13 for both
*Import your "home-made flashes"
*Use Transparency and Motion tools to place flashes on 1st edited frame, leave THRESHOLD at 0 and set CUTOFF to 13
* (of course) Render the project
...and there you have it, nearly perfect flashes done easily.
If you read this tutorial, DO USE this your gunshots will massivly grow in quality.

RE: As Close as it gets to blank-firing guns
can we see some kind of example? Sounds like it'll work, but alot of things sound like they'll work.

Yes, recon has a point. Before posting , it would be wise to test it. But since you posted it anyway, SOMEONE should give it a go I suppose.

Alright, here's one for the poor folks with Pinnacle 8/9. (Sorry to ride off your thread Merc.)
You need:
-Pinnacle Studio 8 or higher (I have no experience with anything unde 8, they may work too)
-Adobe Photoshop 6.5 or higher
-Paint will work too, it'll suck, but it'll work
-At the moment where you want the flash to appear, pause, split the clip and grab the frame.
-Open the frame grab in Photshop, and paste in the muzzle flash of you're choice.
-Position it, and reduce opacity, do it isn't so stark against the background.
-Use the airbrush to brighten up areas that would be illuminated by the flash.
-Save as a JPEG.
-Open in Pinnacle as a still frame, and re-insert it between the two clips.
-Set it to appear for two frames.
-Add you're gunshot, and bingo: a complete muzzle flash in less than a minute with practice.

Well thanks UFP, but true, I did get lazy with a few. I started on this a few weeks ago and I didnt really have time, plus I didnt want to. I have to study for mid-terms, plan out 9Millie, and cope with the reality of my actress rejecting me bcuz of her boy-friend in North Carolina and then taking the next mofo she sees.
So it pretty much sucks right now, but still, there r a few good things.

Excellent muzzle flashes, man. I see a mixture of stock footage from Detonation Films, do I not? I'm watchin this in class, and a buch of kids are flipping out, thinking this guy is shooting an assault rifle in his house.
On a side note, it's crazy, but I have those two exact same airsofts!

Lol, kool. But, yes there is some Detonation films stock footage in there.
To budgetguy and cwf--I got the stock footage from Detonationfilms.com and also I didnt add motion blur to the casing. That's just the way it looked.
One last note, that's me shootin the guns if you didnt know.
