You can buy 3ds max here http://estore.discreet.com/dr/v2/ec_MAI ... _ID=174329
But your looking at spending $3500.
You can get an academic discount but it's still expensive.

I suggest you take a look at the demo first. http://www4.discreet.com/3dsmax/

If you plan on using it now but not a whole lot in the future you can just buy a one year license to it. My friend got one and it cost him only two hundred dollars, problem is once his license runs out he'll have to renew it for another two hundred.

Academic Superstore is a great place to buy it! That's where we get almost all of our products, including 3ds Max!

niether, they both do the same thing, but 3ds max is more widely used. you cannot say one is better than the other though. i have seen some very impressive work come out of both maya and 3ds max.

there are more nice apps, some of them are cheaper. Softimage XSI or Lightwave to name just a few. And I think the free Blender is also capable of remarkable stuff. Problem of blender is: it isn't an industrial standard, while softimage, 3dsmax or maya is.

What about lightwave? I know of some school using the program for 3d stuff. xhuntedoverlordx, is that 200 dollar licensed version academic or just the normal version.

This is a handy thread to compare 3Dmax with Blender.

I don't think he cares anymore, his query has probably been fulfilled considering he hasn't posted again.
