When we needed a big explosion in Jesus 2 I remember spending a night making fireballs in my back garden for compositing later, but I just couldn't get it so it'd look good, so we had to resort to CGI. I did see that, nice tracking. CGI obviously has its place for low-budget people whose skill is m...

But yeah, effects... I prefer it when Grant actually blows something up compared to composits which never look right. Heheheh, you're going to HATE a shot we're working on for The Forest II - particle-sim explosion that's about ten times bigger than anything that could really come from a grenade, d...

I use a lot of digital effects for its convenience during filming. In the film I'm working on, the guy getting shot has just a loincloth on so we can't exactly strap a squib to him, and therefore have to do the blood in post using a combination of seperately-shot chromakey stuff and particle systems.

RE: Your style
I do a lot of my "styling" in post - I like contrasty colour timing and quick cuts. I try not to have all my shots locked down on a tripod, and like to have a good mix of dollies and handheld. I suppose I don't go for any specific style, but I do try and think of interesting ways of shooti...

RE: Another Slightly Controversial Discussion.
I'm not sure I follow the argument. To the general public, only really the directors and actors are truly "appreciated". The guys are feel most sorry for are the rotoscopers.

Nice work. Practical effects are something I'm lacking sorely in; they invariably look better than digital (at least at this level of film-making). My first thought is always to go digital, because of the conveniece of not having to worry about a practical effect on the day. I'll definitely be looki...

If you're going to day-for-night it, shoot when the light is fairly low anyway, not broad daylight, and, vitally important, remember to underexpose your camera a few stops. Blown-out whites are the biggest giveaway to day-for-nighting. I'd certainly be doing some tracking/roto or other post work to ...

You're absolutely right. I always hated that - it's a consequence of the Detfilms bloodstock and the transfer mode I'm using. I've got some better footage and particle stuff now, so that's one small detail that'll definitely be revised. One of the big problems I'm having with this project now is, be...

RE: THE HOME MOVIE MAKERS
There's a HELL of a lot of work you have to go through before you're even close to anyone even considering something like this for distribution. There have been a multitude of films made about the attempt to make amateur films. I like your exploding car, although you do have scaling and shutter timi...

RE: Hand passes through object
Think about how the gun would appear in 3D space in juxtaposition to your actor. Then, apply your masking to the actor so that, if this were say an entirely 3D scene in a 3D modelling program, the part where the gun intersects his hand is occluded. Might take some careful thinking about, but you sho...

Premiere Pro 2 for editing, AE 7 for compositing. I also use a bunch of other stuff like Boujou, XSI, Max, Photoshop... I only own the licenses for Premiere and AE, but my university rather conveniently has academic copies of other stuff. They even have Massive (the crowd sim software used in Lord o...

Good lord. What an utterly pointless debate that has just about nothing to do with the OP's film. ... which is cool in the fact that there was brass ejection and smoke, I'd have added some more cinematic muzzle flashes myself, but that's just my preference. It didn't really have much plot, but somet...

RE: Video: Hollywood Gunshot Effect
Reasonable practical effect, but very little payoff for a lot of effort in this case. Might just have been a bad example of the effect, but I didn't see much of a "spray" that I couldn't do more easily as a post effect. Nicely produced and easy to understand vid, however.
