EFFECTIVE VIDEO COMPRESSOR

Post by buck_suck »

I apologize if this topic has already been discussed but i was wondering. Does anyone know of an effective avi. compressor? In raw DV AVI, our file is huge - At least 6-8 GB. Is there anyway I can compress it down but retain all (or most of) the original quality as if it were uncompressed avi? For example, on BitTorrents, DVD movies are converted (Usually thanks to XVid) into less than 700MB but have good quality.

Thank you.

If you have an XP get Windows Movie Maker, its free for XP only and if you don't have it get it at www.microsoft.com also pinnacle does it, you don't have an editing software?

Of course I do. I use Adobe Primere but it always exports as raw AVI which is between 5 - 10 GB for a 30 min film. Windows Movie Maker can compress but it ends up as WMV and the file quality is horrendously, drastically reduced.

Check out Ashampoo. You can conver the files to mp4, vob, mpg, avi, and wmv. You can also compress them when you convert it. Works excellent.

Output to MPEG-2, 9-10 kbit rate 720x480, smaller but better than DVD quality- approaching broadcast quality

I use DV/DVCPRO-NTSC .avi

It will still be large, but it typically will be less than half the size of uncompressed and I've never noticed any introduced factors into the film. It seems lossless, though something must be getting chopped off I suppose.

An example of the power of this compression is I took 20 gigs uncompressed down to 4 gigs but I can't tell the difference between the two.

I have yet to find its equal.

If you can't muster up the disk space to store DV/DVCPRO-NTSC I suggest your best option is to buy more HDD space rather than fret about a better compression.

Also, if you are in the UK I think you may need DV/DVCPRO-PAL but I am not sure, so don't quote me on that unless you know for sure.

I use AutoGK for creating XVID videos from DV footage.

Have a look at my PDA XVID Tutorial for an example of how to create XVIDs from DVDs.

The tutorial is specifically for DVD to PDA but the principle is the same for creating 700Mb movies etc. You just up the resolution and target file size.
