Budgets

Post by NoRemorse »

Just wondering, what is the biggest-budget movie you guys have done. Just wondering since my last film, POWDER (http://www.matthawkins.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=6787), cost £300 (about $600). Next I'm doing two very different movies: one of a comedy about a day in the life of your average british teenagers at school - like Clerks except with slightly more exciting direction. That will cost nothing, zilch, coz the entire film is set a school, there are no guns, blood, stunts or special effects, and we're all wearing school uniform. My other movie is called DEAD WEIGHT and is a zombie picture. I really want this movie to be like my directorial showcase. Powder was like a practise, to see if I could handle doing a feature length picture, if I could do action and things like that, and soon I'll show you guys it. SKOOL (the school movie) will be like my writing showcase (the first 45 minutes of the script are online at http://www.matt.echowave.net/uploads/NoRemorse/ and you can also see some of POWDER and a bit of the script for DEAD WEIGHT) and DEAD WEIGHT's my proper, big movie. My dream budget would be about £2000 (approx $4000), but I was interested to know how much you guys usually spend on your big projects.

Not to darn bad man. I liked it, fun to watch. Some of the cuts were a little weird and some just a litlte to short, but other then that...not bad at all.

Yeah, that's a big expense for myself as well. My last two films cost me under $1000, like $800-ish, and the one I'm just finishing up pre-production with has already cost me around $1700, equipment and such, and there's still more expenses to come. That's nothing though compared to some amateur films.

Same here if we can help it.

When we did Naughty Soldiers we had to pay for things like the costumes and the van rental and fireworks and make up and what not. Came to several hundred quid. Chemical Ali cost about £10 to make including bus fares and stuff :)

The only movie I have ever spent money on cost about 389 Danish Kroner which is about $65.
However, about $17 of the 65 were spent on a softgun I planned to use, but it wasn't in the movie at all.

My first feature, "Crimson Duel" cost roughly $2000 a few years ago. My next feature, "Dead Rose" cost about $600-700. Currently the feature I am working on, "Shatter" has cost about $600, mostly for travel expenses though. My last film that I completed, "Six Feet Frozen" cost about $500, almost completely for travel/motel since the shoot was out of town.

No. Far from it. Like Grant said, the people with bigger budgets usually have some sort of job. I work my balls off M-F to pay for my movies.

On the other hand, I also think its sometimes how much dedication you have to your project. For my first feature that I spoke of, which cost $2000, I really only had to come up with about half of it, since I was working with a partner. Nonetheless, $1000 was a lot for a 16 year old to come up wtih. But I paid for it over a 2 year period getting about $25/week from a measley paper route. So, if you want to make your movie bad enough, it might take a while, but theres usually a way to make some money if you look hard enough. And there is an advantage to getting started young. If you work then, you'll probably have your whole paycheck to pump into your movie, instead of having to pay for food, insurance, rent, car, etc. when you get older.

windog just like joe i actually work hard. I am a fulltime student at the moment. I get Austudy which is a government allowance (very small), I work as a mulitmedia lecturer (casual) and i work every Saturday and Sunday mornings repping for a bread company. That is how I can afford to spend money on my flms lol
