Black Powder
i was reading some of the posts and asked about using black powder from fireworks, i was advised to use it, yet safely, so my friend and i took some fireworks apart and placed it in a bottle, at the time we could only find a washing up liquid bottle, this was too big so we jammed it full with kitchen towels, for black powder to explode it had to be compact, we got to an empty field, in which we placed the firework fuse in and ran, it burnt down and nothing happened, we were there for about half and hour trying to get it to do something, then my mate thought he'd help it along, he opened up the bottle, started to burn the paper then squeezed the bottle to add compressed, f*ck, it blew up in his face, his entire body was smothered in smoke, and the 'crackly'bits of the firework, luckily he came away unscathed, but shook up, ad the funny thing is after chansing death he wants to do it again, we might vidoe it next time.

dont use a plastic container, the black powder can burn through it straight away. get a glass bottle with a metal screw on lid, (roughley the same size as the amount of powder you have). A glass food colouring bottle or a small spirits bottle will work well.
If you are using powder from fireworks then mix it all up well so that the propelant and manganade can mix with the black powder. Place it in the bottle and clean the threads with a cloth so there is no powder between the attachment of the bottle and the lid.
Then take the lid and put a hole in the center of it with a scuewer or a drawing pin. place ure fuse through the hole so the lid resides about half way down it. try to make this as tighter fit as possible.
On a personal note i like to get a couple more fuses and cut them up into about 5mm sections and place them in the mixture. this sort of acts as a catlest.
screw the lid onthe bottle and tape the lid on as tight as you can from all directions with celertape or gafa tape, (electricle tape is cr**). then bend the fuse over at 90 degrees and tape over where it goes in to the jar.
When you light it stand it upside down on its lid, this will ensure it goes off.
and dont hang around, run like a mother fu*ker. this is a glass container remember, the tape should hold it all together so that the lid and the body seperates in tact or maby two or three pices. Just think when running though that shrapnle can run ALOT faster than you can!!
hope this helps prvent another accident next time![Razz :P](./images/smilies/icon_razz.gif)

Don't use glass bottles... Shrapnel from surrounding debris is dangerous enough... potential chunks of glass to bounce around is lethal.

i do understand it, i have been using pyro since i was about 14. With a glass bottle of this size the wont be an enormous amount of powder in it. If you rap about 10/12 layers of tape round it then the weekest part will be the screw on lid. so that will seperate befor the glass ripes through the tape. i have made hundreds of these. But grants right about having experience so after your first attempt i would suggest trying somthing smaller. like a tennis ball bomb

I think it's horrible how people are handling these things. Did you know magnesium will continue burning even under water. So if you accidently powdered yourself with magnesium - no fun if you're once ignited.
Also Black Powder can be ignited by sparks, friction and static electric charge. so when you build your glass bottle bomb while standing on a syntetic carpet and nervously scratch on the floor, it probably goes boom much sooner than you planed.
Mixing components by trial and error is also extremly dangerous, not only because of poisonous reactions, but because some substances may combust spontanously, like when you have potassium chlorate and accidently have traces of phosphorus (eg. from a machbox) in the mixture.
Before I'd give any advice, I'make sure the guy used to read all security related manuals and knows the basic rules. Something that is clearly not the case here.

Ok, um...ever hear of Phineas Gage? The guy blew a tamping rod thru his head when compacting black powder...If you are going to compact black powder, i would suggest doing it outside the explosive device in a material that doesn't generate static. Otherwise, you could do what Outcast and I did that doesnt require compaction:ct_bullet wrote:well he was 'mashing it' in one of those 'masher' bowls, with a stick thingy
