There are many programs to achieve such effects. I am no whizz on 3D but u can use 3ds Max, Lightwave and a program called blender which i found confusing

Is Lightwave any good? I'll have to see if I can download a demo.

Have a look at The Forest in the gallery section. There's a bit of 3D at the front of that. We're remodelling it now, with decent motion blur. (but it's an a*** to render now - we left it rendering overnight last night and it'd only done 3 frames. That's Mental Ray for you.)

You need a rendering farm, buddy! We have an 18 computer farm just for rendering. :D

3 frames over night means you are probably doing a LOT of unnecessary calculations. MentalRay isn't that bad, you just need the right settings and lighting usage to get it looking the same and greatly reducing the render times.

It was a test for realistic motion blur. Mental Ray has the best motion blur we've seen, which is why we decided to render using it. We put it way up though, which eats up processing time.

As far as a farm is concerned - there are 10 computers in our house, when the time comes to render out final shots, all of them will be turned into a farm. Shouldn't take too long then; we can go out drinking whilst it renders :D

wow that is cool 10 mb limit thats okay for clips so ill post some experimentation and etc

This first clip is my experiment with creating High Dynamic Range Images with my still camera... this scene was rendered with no lights but uses the images light data and global illumination to get the realistic shading and reflections you see here... this technology is being used in the fx industry today from movies like irobot even.
HDRI Test 1
This was in the australian country side when we went camping.
HDRI Test 2
This was my backyard basically, (Notice how the glass ball chrome ball and diffuse ball are all lit and reflect/refract light as if they were in the scene)

I guess the next thing i wanna show is my love for dynamics as in fluids smokes etc this stuff is really important to the fx industry even if someone has to break through a wall or whatever... this is just a fluid dynamics test.
Fluid Test (Retimed)

Uhh next i modeled this character i was going to animate but lost interest in she had dynamic hair and everything.
Freaky Girl

And this really isnt 3d but you guys talk about greenscreen and chroma keying so much i just thaught id post one i did for some dude ages ago.

the 3d programs you use dont matter at all... no matter what you use in 3d if you know it well enough you get what you want out of it... i use lightwave because i like its work flow not what neat features it has because theyre all basically the same.

p.s. unless the best you'v seen came from your own renders, i wouldn't act so smug 8)
