Egg blood hits

Post by iamloser999 »

For the movie The MAnson Family theres a documentary on how they made it and it shows the director taking an egg and hollowing it out and filling it with blood. he used this instead of a squib and just threw it as an actor. in the movie with the quick cutting it seemed to work well.
Has anyone tried this before with success at all??????

sounds kinda stupid, you'd see the shells and why not just use a squib?

Because:

Egg= 12 cents
&
Squib= In excess of $50 (for the real thing) + potentially dangerous

On camera you can't tell it's an egg either. More to it than what it appears.

Sounds interesting. Is there any certain technique to doing this?

HAHAHA OMFG.... yeah the technique is the old overhand throw.

If you threw the egg hard enough would the shells fly off screen and not be noticed? could they be masked out later? these are the things you gotta think about.

If you color the egg in with a red marker or paint, and it as the egg shels splat off it could look like bits of flesh. Just an idea.

I've done some egg throwing before(dont ask) and it seems like a hollow egg could break in your hand from the force of you just rearing back and throwing it so hard. I dunno. I'll try it sometime, cus if it did actually work that would be a very nice alternative to the squib which I dont have any money to buy. Someone should make a test video and post it. I would like to see this before i actually attempt to throw an egg full of very clothes staining liquid.

hollow out, permanent marker the outside, put a little bit of red food coloring on inside, shake, let dry, then fill it with blood.

aaronv2 you may think it is as easy as lobbing an egg over your head but, after speaking to the gentleman who worked on special effects in ‘The Manson Family’ I found out there are a few things that you wouldn’t think to do…but since you seem to be a know it all I wont bother recounting them

Do they actually throw it? Or do they have some sort of air powered, i dunno, mini-cannon to launch it?

That right there, Mr.Anderson, is a good idea. A sort of mini spud gun that you stuff a blood pack in (the usual latex type, of course) and then fire at the actor. It'd only work for body shots--too risky to aim at the head--, and, only from short range, but still, it seems to be a fairly inexpensive way to get nice blood hits. I might just have to build one of those for some testing!

well, this sounds terribly interesting and cheap as hell. I think I'm gonna go test it out.

I tested this method out but with mixed results. Firstly was that my friend watched me while I threw the egg at him, so he flinched, and when it is finally cropped, it does not look that good. But, the blood effects looked good and I could hardly even see the eggshell.

My advice would be to not let your actor see the person throwing it, so that they will not flinch before impact, and their immediate response would look genuine.

That's probably true...i never really considered flinching..good advice.
