My dusting/ashing test - Updated

Post by Save »

Well... I saw this subject come up a few time here.
I am obssesed with vampire dusting... tried to perfect it as much as I can.
I used the "particle playground" effect on this shot (AE 6.5). The skull model was made in Maya. Now I use poser for Skeleton poses, But it looks like plastic.

you mean like a lens flare? There is the "Blade" kind of dusting, which is fire, bones and dust. Or the "Buffy" Way (My way) which is only dust and bones. :)

Welcome to the Forum!

Liked it, but yes, i agree with Ctbullet about the light, but i assume that that would be added in as a final on screen burst, not just in the test.

Just out of interest, what part of Israel are you from? I was over there last summer on kibbutz Dalia and loved it, am planning on visiting again

The buffy was was Your way? It looked cool. some stuff could be worked on ... can you explain how you did it?

Im going to search for footage of blade trinity and buffy and have a go because it seems like you guys are obsessed with emulating it

Okay after searching for youtube found this...

Blade Trinity

How did I do it?
In After effects 6.5...
Layers and layers of "particle playground" with gassian blur on it...
the model of the skull falling there was made in Maya.
and obcourse making my sister dissappear by filming the background and masking her to disappear in parts.
Tell me, how can I improve it?

well what im thinking of doing is taking a skeleton and animating it to match the live action then who knows what to make the smoke and stuff ill mix alot of sprite animation with some dynamics in 3d to make it look varied and realistic.... the blade trinity ones look like fractal noise with some luminosity added and its sort of like when you light a tea bag on fire... so that will take me some time to work out all the animation constraints
Muzzle Flashes, Bullet Time, Lightsabers, Buffy Vampire Effects, War Films.... Ahhhhh!

hey that was cool, but yeh i agree there should be some sort of lense flair or something and the skull fell a little slow.

I thought it was pretty cool, there was a reasonably noticable static bevel in there though. I think it would be cool with light coming through it. Perhaps you could use the plugins alot of us have. Im not sure what its called but it has particular, lux and some other stuff for after effects, that might help but im not sure i have after effects, i just find it too hard.

geez... this coming from lensflare smoke boy... his vid had 3d rendered objects and some sprite particle animation. you had a lens flare and a fire on the floor. why cant you see how contradicting you are?

I actually had a smoke machine, not a fire. And i said his was pretty good, exept that his had a noticable bevel, now ur just trying to make me sound bad.

That was cool... I love the shrink effect. I disagree about the lens flare cr**... just go straight to dust! Why not? Especially with a full person, the shrinking effect to a skeleton which dissolves is cool. If you could mask in some real ash that someone throws or something, it'd be really really cool to see.

yeh, i agree. i didnt mean a lense-flair, i meant just a flash of white light or something to cut to the ash and skull already falling

Basicly I don't like to use lens flare in those kind of shots.. but maybe I'l try it sometime.. who know...
It will give it a "blade" kind of feeling... Anybody got a good skeleton model for Maya that dosen't look like plastic? the skull here kindof sucks because I made it myself without any real knowledge in modeling...

not related : I just came back from a final test (I don't know whats the word in english but it is the most important test) in Cinema (camera structure, editing etc.)... went so well... I think thats a 90-100..

Ok, here's a rule...NEVER do a canned photoshop/after effects flare. Those are cheap, and pretty obvious.

I liked the effect, it was very impressive, but perhaps if the ash puffed outwards in a sort of explosion (though without fire).

Either way, that's a terrific effect, and if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
