messing around with a corpse's hand

Post by bloodymess »

here's a few small stop-motion animations I did with a latex&wire hand out of boredom. nothing fancy. also, note that since my animation program doesn't like my camcorder, I had to animate it using windows movie maker; the best I could do with it is 17fps, so the animation is a bit jerky.

Pretty good. You're moving the hand too much or not using enough frames.

I used to be into stop motion but needed something that actually was posable.

Did Evil Dead 2 give you an idea about animating the hand?

And if your interested... http://www.theeffectslab.com/forums/index.php

thanks to both of you, and yes, the frame count is poor, 17fps as I said earlier. but now I downloaded monkeyjam, so I'll be able to do 24fps for now on(if my camcorder is compatible, I still haven't checked).

You're not the first one who thought of Evil Dead 2, but strangely, even tho I'm a fan of the trilogy, the inspiration came from "Thing" of addams family. if the hand looks like that, it's because I already had it; it's the left hand of a full size mummified corpse I made a while ago.

and I knew of "the effects lab" for 5 years, now(even though at that time it was called "The monster lab") but thanks anyways ;)

btw, i'm looking for animation ideas for that little hand, if any of you has one, i would be glad to hear it.

here's a new one; shot in 24fps using Monkeyjam.(very easy to use and free animation program, I strongly recommend it!)

That was cute- any chance of loosing the jitter you get in the shots? Maybe try not to zoom and just chance angles?

Use the piece of wood but make it blue and chroma it out.

For your new updated test I couldn't see a difference, it actually looked worse. Either it was youtube or you moving the hand too much.

5 years? wow, what kind of SFX are you into? I'm just getting into facial prosthetics with foam latex. Monster Makers seems like a very reliable source with their constant feedback to all your questions.

pdj: thanks!
the jitter is, for a beginner using a 30yo tripod in a 3'² spot in the corner of the computer room, almost always present. practice will probably make it mostly disappear, but for the moment I must deal with it. perhaps if i knew of a freeware program that creates motion blur, it may be less jittery...

DEDFX: i'm afraid that if I chroma key the block of wood, my hand will appear to float in the air!

it's probably me making to big moves with the hand for a 24fps animation, I don't see how youtube could do that.

and i'm mostly in prop making and blood effects than in prosthetics, but when I need one, I can make it without any problem. I still haven't tried out foam latex, I only used liquid latex and silicon caulk(cheaper than prosthetic silicon, but it is quite firm, not the best product. however, it does the trick for small jobs.)

Make the wire and block in blue and have light on them that's neutral all around. You just need to place the hand so it looks like gravity is making it go down (on its fingertips, on its wrist stump, etc.)
