Barret M82 .50BMG prop gun
I'm trying to make a quick five minute long hitman movie, need to get it done as soon as possible. I already have a friend (GREAT writer by the way) writing the script, it was originally going to be around 15 minutes long, but he's shortening it to five so I can make a quick film that people MAY like.
I need to make a Barret M82 .50BMG Anti-material rifle out of cheap wood, not TOO cheap, but cheap. I don't want to make it out of ply-wood because that stuff doesn't seem to sand down too smoothly, need some type of wood that I can easily manipulate and is some-what strong. I can't make this thing out of balsa wood, it needs to be stronger than that, more durable.
Any ideas would help tremendously.

Other than balsa wood there isn't really any material that is easy to work with and structuraly sound. Your best bet is to use normal wood (choose a softwood, like pine) and make very careful use of tools. I would suggest cutting the shape out of the wood with a bandsaw if you can gain access to one and a jigsaw if you can't. After that you'll need a spokeshave or drawknife to do the basic shaping and some a good supply of sandpaper to finish the job. It's not as hard as it looks with the right tools.

You're going to have a tough time making something vaguely similar. You might be better off using metal parts instead of wood; it will be stronger and easier to work. Maybe even look for a replica of the firearm.

I was looking for a good quality verison of it on youtube with no luck.See also Smokin' Aces for some impressive use of the .50 cal.
I thought the coolest thing about that scene in Miami Vice was that the car being shot to bits was really being shot to bits by those Barrets, then composited people in with squib hits.
