Digital effects or real effects
This topic has been bugging me forever, I see alot of low budget/indie filmmakers use digital effects for just about everything which is my biggest pet peeve. I have seen people use digtial blood in shots they could have use kool aid for but I do agree digital effects have their place for some things but I belive a actor isnt able to act to their fullest unless the action is in their face. I personaly prefer real time effects in movies since Its my speciality ( Im a fx artist) and also because of my earlier belives but digital does have its place, I dont want anyone jumping out of cars that doesnt have the knowledge and training to do so. Well post away my fellowe movie people and if you EVER need real time effects help Im the guy to ask .

RE: Digital effects or real effects
You're right, digital does have its place, I use it when absolutely necessary (i.e., spaceships, alien monsters, etc.) but for gore, stunts, pyrotechnics, etc., real-time effects are beautiful.

RE: Digital effects or real effects
The only thing I ever use digital effects for is muzzle flashes, but I haven't been doing those kind of movies lately. When writing a film I usually refrain from digital effects because I know at my level of filmmaking they will automatically lack goodness.

You really dont need muzle flashes in most cases since the light from the sky and etc usualy hide it, only sound is really needed. Night time really should be the only time its needed. One more good tip, watch guns shooting and study the recoil , I see to often people shooting a pistol like its a shotgun.

you have to remember that as amateur film makers we are sometimes restricted by certain things, money being one, safety being another and the law as well. First off, digital muzzle flashes can be the only option because replica blank firers are loud, scary (to anyone that could hear it) and has law restrictions. Fake blood is easy to make and easy to use, but squibs carry a health and safety warning, because you are basically strapping a small explosive device to yourself. In professional films they have a pyro technition at hand who is licenced and trained to use them. People who make them at home are taking a big risk in using them so digital blood hits are not only safer but if used properly are effective. Finally digital explosions are again effective if done properly, blowing up a car or building with actors in are not recommeded, however there are sites that sell pyro film explosives, and yes there is still some danger in using them. Finally an amateur film maker might be on a budget and cant afford the cost of some effects and its easier to use on the computer. So if you can use real effects go for it, if not then do it digitally (but make it realistic. If you cant then don't bother)

I'm really starting to get fed up of digital effects in low budget movies. I can't remember the last time I saw a real explosion in a home movie!
But yeah, we're all in the same boat and use them to fill the void that we'd like to be filled in by a budget, so hey-ho.

Yeah, I really do appreciate a good live effect. However, I find it exceedingly hard to set them up, so I have mainly relied on digital, although I would much prefer not to. Money and safety is just too high a priority for me. But in our upcoming zombie flick, we'll have live fx, so I'm looking forward to that outcome. Our writer is a pneumatics expert, so he can set up fx, and I'll do my best to make 'em look great.

in my opinion i like both visual and digital effects. I myself plan to do fake blood visually for my movies. But sometimes ill have to add it in after. Ill do it over a green screen to make it. But some times sets need to be made and some people don't have the money to do so. Instead of me rambling on ill just say both are valueable and for low buget films they both have their uses.

I use a lot of digital effects for its convenience during filming. In the film I'm working on, the guy getting shot has just a loincloth on so we can't exactly strap a squib to him, and therefore have to do the blood in post using a combination of seperately-shot chromakey stuff and particle systems.

Mushiman. He left because some of the newbies at the time made him mad.Gyro wrote:Who's the dude who made the film, Alien Dawn? Anyways, that was an awesome film with some great live effects and explosions up until the end when they had that terrible cg animated alien space-craft. Just about ruined the entire film.

Speak no ill of Mushiman here. He is an esteemed forefather of this forum and one of the more innovative members. Ornsack and Camclub will back me up I am sure of this opinion.

I'm still a follower of Mushiman and kinda forget he doesn't post on here these days.Grant wrote:Speak no ill of Mushiman here. He is an esteemed forefather of this forum and one of the more innovative members. Ornsack and Camclub will back me up I am sure of this opinion.
I agree he did get very angry on here quite easily, but then that's not hard. But yeah, he doesn't seem to make films any more. His co-actor/director has made some great stuff since.
But yeah, effects... I prefer it when Grant actually blows something up compared to composits which never look right.
