film soundtrack music
Hey,
OK I've been making music for a little while now (just for fun) and have been posting samples of my stuff to various msgboards, the most common piece of feedback is that it sounds like 'video game music'. When I ask why the response is that its too epic and the rhythm tracks are not suited to hip-hop/pop. So i'm posting to ask you film-makers if you reckon my stuff is on the right track for soundtrack music?
jan03.mp3 (under 2meg, samples of 6 tracks - various)
dec02.mp3 (under 2meg, samples of 6 tracks - various)
nonose.mp3 (2.6meg or so, samples of about 23 tracks - spooky/creepy/darker stuff)
any feedback or constructive criticism extremely welcome (either here or to matt@hatchard.com)
Cheers!

Generally good sounds allthough some of the tracks were a little short to tell. A lot the of the tracks have no lyrics which is very useful when selecting film music. With commerical music you may have a suitable intro but if the scene is too long it cannot be used. The other problem with commercial music is that of copyright infringement.
Keep up the good work, we may need something for our current production of 'Hollow Point'.

I've edited the post to add hyperlinks to the files.
Downloaded all tje files. I thought they were quite good. I think I prefered the nonose.mp3 stuff best. It was atmospheric and I could see it as mood music in a film.
In the jan03 samples I think the back beat is slightly too loud and obscures the other musical elements slightly.
As Adam said having access to music without lyrics is extremely useful for amateur films.
Just been looking on The eJay site. They have got lots of songs people have created and uploaded. Worth a look.

Hi guys, first off thanks a lot for listening and commenting!
With all of the above music I can edit voice samples out, adjust volumes etc. so if you are interested in using any of my stuff, I'd definately be interested.
If you required anything specific I'd be happy to work with you to get the desired result. You've got my email (matt@hatchard.com) so just give me a shout.
Cheers for the feedback, its appreciated.

Just listened to them Matt, Yeah pretty good. Maybe a little long for some shorts. They do present a certain mood. I have a friend who conducts all my music specifically for my projects. He first gets told about the scene and then he gets the final cut os it before effects and sound is added in. He then composes the music to fit the length, timing and mood of it.

Don't tell me, your friend is Daniel Johns of Silverchair
Only kidding!! I do like Silverchair though...
Anyways, i've been recording my own music for my productions & it's quite suprising what results you can get with a half decent keyboard.

I have tried using a keyboard to provide a self-composited sound track but I find it's too much like a porn movie soundtrack (I, er, accidently caught a bit of one whilst flick through the channels, honest) I guess it depends on the quality of the keyboard!

Hey, I'm Grant's friend who composes the music. And seeing this is the first time I've read these boards I thought I'd comment on something said.
Mushiman asked if it was Daniel Johns. Well, close. I was acually born on the same day. I pity myself, but I've learned to live in his shadow as a short-film musician.

My mate is also a good composer and he is solely contracted to me, he did composition for 'passage of arms'. which was pretty cool, but he can also play just about any instrument, (he is a music teacher )Lute is a fantastic composer and is solely contracted to Sick Individual Productions for all soundtracks

Yes, and like I have said, you need to get some MIDI editing software onto your PC, so you can import the files and correct the timing. This software generates muscial notation and lets you apply new sound fonts (Samples or alternate waveforms of instruments) to your piece. If you got yourself a Soundblaster Live, you'd get a load of this stuff bundles in for free, but most PCs now come with good built-in soundcards, capable of doing environmental effects, etc. but you lack the software.
