Compression format

Post by 2nd_Recon »

I was looking through the forum, trying to find what format to compress things to, and most people said either use .WMV or the Divx Codecs, I used the Divx, and it shrunk a 13 second clip to 49.1 MB. That seems a bit large, especially when you look at it's quality. basically, I'm looking to find out what Mushiman compressed The Robbery with, because that one had good quality and didn't have huge size for it's length. I'm putting this in the board because I want to know if their are any better ones, and I want this information available to the public.

If you used DivX, make sure your compressing your audio too, MP3 is the best I have found. What quality did you have DivX set at?

DivX sucks terribly. Sure, it can compress, but A.) It's an annoying player, and B.) The player is FULL of spyware...

I hadn't eather, then my brother got a copy, and we couldn't figure it out. you should try the Windows media 9 codec, TechTV did a piece on it and they liked it better then both divix and quicktime, which is strange being that its from Microsoft, also its free. Thats what I'm going to use for my next flick, I want to say its desent quality, for about a meg a min.

divx isn't full of spyware/anything else, just download the free codec (not the pro version)
you can create and play movies (without the player), without anything anoying...

AND, microsofts compresion is very good

you should be able to shrink 13 secs down to much less than that - ive got like 2 mins of footage compressed to about 12mbs using divx... its best to use it on short clips therefore. :)

I tried to compress a 13 second clip. It "Shrunk" to 40-somethign MB, then I put it into a Zipped folder, compressing it to 20-something MB using Divx, and you don't have very good video quality

My favorite one to use is Intel Indeo video 5.10 compression format. The quality is outstanding, yet I found the size to be the smallest of all the formats I have tried. That is my recommendation. Every movie I have placed on this site uses that format and range around 1 meg.
