break arm

Post by justsomeguy »

i am doing a kinda martial art film of these guys fighting. i have taken tae kwon do and brazilian jui-jitusu for almost 2 years so i kinda know what i am doing. but i need to have some way where a guy jumps up and breaks the other guys arm. it sounds pretty easy but im sure you guys out there will have a way better way to do it than i could think of. here's a picureeof the technique, http://www.gracie-barra.co.uk/graphics/ ... mani_4.jpg

oh yeah i it can be done with the computer (don't see why/how you could/would do that) i guess i put this in the wrong catergorie, oh well no big deal  or maybe im wrong again and it does belong in here :D

i would not bother about CGI for this effect personally. Shoot the attack with as many camera and angle changes as possible. Use tight editing and nice sound effects. Will the arm be visibly seen or be covered over by clothing?

A simple sound effect followed by the actor's reaction to the extreme pain would be all you'd need to deliver the illusion that the actor's arm has been broken! Try filming a sample, and you'll for yourself!

Of course, if you're about to snap the arm in 2, with the bone pushing through, that's pretty gross, and you could quite easily do it in Camera cuts like Grant says.

Wide view showing kick to arm
<dub sound in here> close-up showing moment of impact,
wide view showing arm flying away from kick <end of sound> arm still flying away from impact
close up showing damaged arm
wide view showing actor holding arm in pain!

It's that easy, and very convincing if done right! They only need to me momentary cuts put together. Overall, the running time would take about twice as long as the actual event in real life.

Try the above and see how you get on with that. You'll be amazed what illusion a well placed sound effect can do!

yeah on a close up you could have a prop arm or piece of wood in the jacket that simply breaks under pressure of the technique
