Like I have gone on and on about, If ANYONE wants to try to turn the end of the barrel 90 degrees and put dirt down it, then launch it in the air for an explosion before I get around to it, let me know how it goes...

Also, excuse my ignorance, but aside from launching potatos to see how far they go, what else do you use potato guns for? Do people shoot them at each other?

i would not shoot them at each other!!! I have seen one shoot a bottle through a car door!! Well you could use your imagination and think of concepts for them. I have also seen people shoot frozen oranges and cause lots of damage to targets!! Much fun to be had. The compressed air method is much safer and reliabel then the fly spray combustion method. They are also generally very loud

I suggest, if you wish to fire them at one another, to use cotton balls!

I think the average distance of a good spud gun launch is 200-300 yards.

The strange thing about the one that I made was that it only shot 15-20 feet at first. However, as I used it more, it shot further and further - upwards of 100 yards. I spent about $25 for the materials and an hour or so to build it. Although, I really don't see any potential use for special effects. It would have to be heavily (or not so heavily) modified in order to serve any purpose in the field of low budget special effects.

How so? I believe that by simply adding a 90 degree elbiw at the end of the barrel and placing dirt in the elbow, the actor can run, step on the ignitor button, and the gun will go off and the dirt will fly in the air, creating a nice grenade/mortar effect, and you can alter the size with the amount of dirt and combustion material.

found this link http://www.rotteneggs.com/se/2684023.html and it is about wireless ignition, which would be tight if you put a spud cannon under groung, and covered it with dirt, shen you could just use the remote, and BOOOOOM!!!

That seems like a little bit overkill.

the compressed air method is very powerful and reliable.

Well, I'm kinda avoiding spud guns for awhile, since the cops confiscated mine. I can understand it though, seeing as I did commit arson with it and all that...

wow harsh. i built a brilliant one once for $15 and i bet it went about 400 yards lol. but then the explosion in the chamber became a little too much and it cracked so i obviously was to afraid to use it anymore. wouldnt want to lose an arm. i've never gotten around to building another.

yes that is the problem with explosive combustion ones. They do go off really well and very loud, but the problem is an explosion is occuring in the chamber and who knows when a breach may occur :( I have seen one explode in my and a friends arms once as we fired it late one night at a party. Luckily no injuries, just bruises and luckily the chamber did not fly to bits it just seperated :)

As far as I know in the US as long as it doesn't use combustion as a means of propelling the projectile and its not used for a criminal act then its legal. I built about 3 pneumatic cannons myself and I plan to test out that 90 degree elbow thing could be great effect.

yeah we are a little different over here sadly :( People are so scared now due to the fear of terrorism and suck like. Doesn't help having the occasional advert on TV telling you to dob in suspicious behaviour, but not actually stating what is "suspicious"!!

Well, I live in the US, and while the BATF doesn't classify them as firearms, if they're used for recreation, apparently, "trying to shoot fireworks out of it and in the process lighting a ravine on fire" doesn't fit in the category of "recreation". I don't know what the hell I was thinking.
