Lol, yeah really. Large air matresses work nicely. However they are quite springy and there is a chance they will pop beneath you. Spring matresses hurt like a son-of-a-gun when you impact straight on! Foam is probably the best overall choice.

True, but they hurt like hell. Foam is really hard (of course depending), and barely gives at all. You land on that thing from a mere 5 feet, and I guarantee you'll feel it in the morning. Just one jump on that buddy, and you'll have a headache for hours... it jolts you like no other! But I'm sure you can find softer foams, the one I used we found in my friend's garage (which may explain it).

Not my foam, my foam is soft as hell! I jumped off a really high place i know fell onto the foam didnt feel a thing. Mines softer then my bed!

If you lot want to fall without getting sore heads like BrownCow says, you need to build yourselves up with certain excercises to train your body to take the shocks without damage. Like I said before, Judo is probably good for that because you're constantly being thrown around.

LOL!, no, it's the slight whiplash effect you get from when you meet with an impact of any kind. Even if your fall is cushioned, you can get whiplash, twist your neck, anything like that. If you train to fall, you can overcome many of these physical problems. How do you think wrestlers jump from the top of a ladder straight onto the floor? They're trained up for it. If a regular person did that, they'd probably end up with a plaster cast!

At school we put two 12 inch tchick crash mats on top of each other for vaulting and stuff- that works a treat.

pole vaulting, hell yes, if it worked for pole vaulting it should work for what you need.

I am used to simple stunts. I can throw myself into the air and land on my face without hurting myself. I'm also used to landing flat on my butt, although sometimes it does hurt! A big trick is knowing how to displace the impact and not just go SMACK! Learning how to effectively roll head over heels without breaking your neck is useful too. Not just for filmmaking, but in general as well.

Yeah, well ill practice first with my actors make them start small to get used to it, right now im just haveing them land side ways on their side on to the mat instead of cold dirt lol so basicly they launch them self on to the mat itll look more real this way to, becuase they don't have to put their hands out to break the fall they just land on their side and then when the camera angle changes they mats wont be there

yeah it is all in the camera angle. I cant remember who it was but someone on the forum once told me, if you cant see it on camera it is "NOT" there to the audience.
