Not so much the processor but how much memory can the mother board address, 2 gb is probably somewhere approaching... overkill, look at your resources and see how much of the 1 gb is free when you have a lot of apps running, unless you are close to the limit, most of the 2 GB is going to sit idle... Might cut down a bit on swapping, but with 1 GB I doubt there is a lot of swapping going on as it is now..

yeah i would definetly say without knowing exactly what you have hardware wise that 2gig is a waste and will not be used. May even slow the system down without research

when after effects says that error about not having enough mem, is that ram mem or vid card mem? cause i can understand vid card mem cause i have two monitors running on a single 128 mb card, but a gig of ram. i am running other progs like windows media player, but does that mean if getting more mem would help? cause i can get mem for cheap but i definately dont want to buy a whole new video card

Then you are set! Turn off the computer, place the new hardware into the appropriate slot, lock the tab thingies, and you are set. Just boot it up and let 'er rip! :)

keep in mind that with the heavier applications like 3dsmax and... I guess after effects (haven't got it YET), you can make effective use of the ram up to about 1/2 to 2/3 of your processor speed in MHz, it's not really a scientific measure, just a easy-to-remember rule. For example, my old 900 MHz will never utilize more than 512 MB RAM and my 3.06 GHz laptop won't do anything faster or more efficiënt with more than 2 GB of RAM. The thing you're most concerned with is that you have ENOUGH ram for those applications (they need at least 512 MB, preferably 768-1024 MB) and that the clock speed is max for your FSB (don't buy pc2700 when your motherboard can have pc3200 etc.), otherwise you won't get a speed advantage. I think 2 GB of ram is a bit much, I'd save the $100 of that extra 512 MB, put 512 MB extra in and buy an audigy or something :D

well at least im not the only one, so that error is about the ram mem, not the vid mem? i think i may upgrade to 1.5 or 2 gigs (btw way its 3200 like someone backthere said) but i wont ever go beond that unless i upgrade most of everything else like in several years

Well, I tend to render particles at 900,000 in a scene on top of everything else too. So it is a real physical memory burdon.

well i have dual sticks of kingston 512 hyper-x pc 2700 ram and it workjs fine, it was cheap and it overclokced easily to 3200 speeds.

right now my amd mobile 2400+(they come wiff unlcoekd multiplier and better heat tolerance).

and i have it right now at 11x225 at 1.67 volts

So dont bash pc2700 ram!!
