Terrascript: script generator for Terragen online!

Post by ssj3gohan »

Yes, you've read it, I have single-handedly made a web-based tool to easily make animation scripts for Terragen, the oh-so-much used tool for great landscapes in a flash!

Please look at the site, say what you think, constructive (and other) comments are welcome, it's still in development so if there's a typo or misread info somewhere, don't make too much of a fuss over it, it's just silly old me making a site. I'm planning on making a FAQ too, so don't hesitate if you don't understand what the f*** is happening (a bit of terragen knowledge is of course needed to get what the site should do).

Note: the .exe is made by a friend of mine, still quite under development, so don't ask anything about how that should work. It will be replaced very soon.

Visit the site here:

haha, seriously, I'm writing this what, 5 minutes later?, I've already updated the site.
You're confused? shouldn't be. It's easy! It's just a web-based animation script renderer for a random landscape-and-atmosphere image generator. Easy.

Okay, the first FAQ question, only frequently question ever asked, is online. Knock yourself out! And look at the site too, while you're busy

No, I didn't make terragen, I only made terrascript. I'm a scripter, no programmer. I know f*** about how to make a scanline renderer in 400 KB, I do know perfectly how to make a few simple for-loops to generate such a script. Anyway, what I did make:
-the website (it rocks, admit it, just look at the fabulous menu)
-terrascript, the actual thing that is cool on that rocking website
-some renders from terragen, which seriously aren't hard to make, just try some yourself.
So, can now somebody with terragen experience come and b*tch at me? Would be kinda helpful, I'm almost bored.

I get that you're confused, should I make a Terragen tutorial on the website? Would that help? Would anyone look at that? Is anyone reading this topic beside luke and me? What is the meaning of life?

HA! I know that! Life is a number, and that number is 1!

Terragen is an amazing program. I can't wait for T2, the renders from that software belw me away... here are some previews. Hopefully your script won't have to be re-written for the new one.

oke luke, I'm writing it right now but I first gotta ask john mclusky if it's awrite to upload a tutorial on sth he made (it's the polite thing to do). Besides, the tutorial will be covering ALL ground that is to cover with terragen v0.9.19 (current version, probably one of the last versions of terragen 1 to be made). And for terragen 2, I'm afraid my script will HAVE to be rewritten, but that's no prob as it will probably be a paid program by then, so people will stick with terragen 1 anyways. If everything goes well, I'll have that tutorial at least by monday, maybe earlier (it's a hell lot of work to make it readable and understandable for everyone, let alone to do that with every button and window in terragen).

It works the same as windows terragen, only the nice borders around the windows look different. I will install Virtual PC some time to be able to simulate Mac's too, will be needed to test compatability etc.

Ok bender, I've completed about 33% of the tutorial, look at it and be amazed of my tutor skills. Oh, and understand terragen. That would be cool. Have fun! I should change the name to terrascript & terragen tutorial btw. EVERYBODY!!! TERRAGEN TUTORIAL HALF ONLINE! Thank you.

hehe, I just updated it. I'm making a tutorial per window, so just count the windows and count those that I have written the tutorial for, there are a total of 16 or so useful windows, and I have already made tutorials for 8 of em, so now I'm on 50%. Okay, okay I'm bad at maths. Well, I'm not, just pretending I am :D

s***, I still gotta say something about u.s. amateurfilmmaker's post. Yeah, the TGD renderer is absolutely fabulous, I just don't understand why professionals at autodesk needed 15 years to make nice landscapes, and terragen 2 can make the coolest of cool landscapes ever in a flash!
It features some things I can't wait for, like:
-procedural detail (meaning that far away less detail is rendered, and in the front more, which is much better than right now, terragen 0.9 is not that efficient.
-cumulus cloud generation. Just blows me away.
-overhanging terrain. No fudge-nuggeting idea how they do it, but it's simply unbelievably cool
-lens effects. I thought they were going to make auto/manual secondaries and depth of field. Not sure about that, not really important as Mental Ray in 3ds max can do it too. Everybody, buy 3ds max. It's cool, cooler than terragen. But certainly not easy, I gotta warn you.

Okay, so far my enthusiasm. I'm gonna stuff my face with loads of fat now, and sleep after that, please read the tutorial AND REPORT MISTAKES, BROKEN LINKS, EVEN MINOR TYPOS. they should be abundant.
