Do they actually have to be hollow?

Well, being hollow would make them easier to break, no?

thats why you should just cut a plastic bottle in half, pour in a thin layer on both halfs then when its dry or something pop them out then seal them together. i havnt tried it so i dunno if it works....

Compicated idea so you get a daigram. Make an outer bottle mould, the size of the bottle you want. Also make an inner plug about 1/4 inch smaller. Suspend the inner inside the outer, then fill with liquid sugar glass. When hard remove both moulds, then attach a sugar glass disc to the bottom, completing the bottle.

The outer one could be a real bottle with the bottom cut off, the inner one could be anything, a smaller bottle, wood, or clay like you said.

Make a two part plaster mould of your bottle, or rubber if you can afford it and mix up a batch of sugar glass. Fill the mould and let it set up for a few moments. Pour the excess sugar glass mixture out and let the mould cool. Open it and voila! Hollow breakable prop.
