There are several simple blue-screen programs avaliable. The cheapest and most useful would probably be something like Videowave, although you can do Blue Screening in programs such as Premiere and Final Cut (better for editing but not so good for blue screening).

I've heard that After Effects w/Production bundle does a good job with compositing.
I use Media Studio Pro and have been very happy with the results.
Loads of examples and some tutorials on my movie's site: HiddenPhantom.com

Have fun.

I tend to use Adobe Premiere Pro for all my masking. It isn't the strongest application, but it gets done what I need doing!

Grant, can I have another star too? PLEASE???

It works but there are some deteriation around the objects infront. I havent used anything else for masking, but I'd say there has to be something better for it and is more meant for it then premiere is.

Don't look only into After Effects though. There are several other very powerful compositing programs out there. Competatively, Combustion is another really good program.

Serious Magic's Ultra is an excelllent keying application. We use it almost exclusively now for all our keying for commercials and production on the TV show...

Yes, very good program. It has some cool features, like shadows/reflections, etc.

The main problem with blueboxing is the miniDV format. NTSC (4.1.1) and PAL (4.2.0) doesn't contain enough color information to mask things smoothly. you need to use DigiBeta instead, or HDV and then downssample it to NTSC/PAL to get 4.2.2 color resolution. If you once got that, any stupid little compositing app can do excellent results.

(Unfortunately) I am using MiniDV PAL. This means each block of 2*2 Pixels uses only one color information. On an interlaced frame the size of 2*2 pixels is in fact 2*4 Pixels! This BLOCK will be the finest resolution one may get for the matte line (outline) of the foreground footage. A very blocky outline.

BTW there's a lot of composition apps out there:

BTW. there are many good compositing apps of course. But unfortunately most of them are not for free. In fact I didn't find a satisfying App for free.

so I wrote my own tool some time ago. Here's an example, although resized to 50% of the original size:

If you can live with a not so userfriendly GUI then try it:

But of course, After Effects + Co are much better, so most people have no use for this my inhouse tool. Well I wonder how many ppl are using a warezed expensive apps. People have a diffrent understanding of the term nobudget".
