Most of my ideas I've already expressed to you in the chat. If you give some more specifics, I can drain some more from my saturated brain...

try a small theatre company - they've all done hamlet at one stage or other and are bound to have prop swords etc. The other good place is a historical society, even if they dont have the props they can probly put u in touch with someone who does

Plastic can work for armour as well. The way around armour is to remember that only Knights on hourse back had full plate armour most grunts just had at most a brest plate, so go with lether and quilted armour, and chain mail.

Go to Wal-mart hit the faberic section, there you can find quilted matereal which will work for quilter armor, and possabley you can find some stuff that looks like leather, basicly let your emagenation louse in the matereal department. Then go to Lows or home depot, and walk around with your brain set to armor, and look at the stuff, and you might find somthing that looks like what you need or could be with some work, even though it was never ment for it. Lows is a great place for inspration.

i think hisotrical societies rent their stuff - the other way of doing it is befriending a bunch of them and borrowing their stuff

Oh definately go for that. Many objects in Saving Private Ryan were actual relics. Like some of the nazi helmets and the most of the dropships.

Hah in the 4th grade i had to make medival costume for or studying .
I used an oversized tincan and put it around my head. Then with a electric saw i cut eyes.
Soon i looked like bender ( from Futurama)
Then went into the lost and found at school and found a red denim like sweater and cut the arms off.
For the "Jousting Sword" {whatever} [laughs]
I used a long paper roll and covered it in Duct tape.
Kinda limited hey.
Anyways dont do exactly what i said or you will look like a desperate 9 year old.
LOL.

There's a lot of things you can try.

Probably one of the easiest, would be to find your local SCA chapter (visit sca.org). They're a midieval reenactment group and might be willing to help you out.

Aside from that you'll probably have to make costumes yourself. A lot of armor in midieval times (if any was worn) was leather. Most leather stores have a scrap box and you can probably find some pieces large enough to be of use.

Making chain maille isn't really all that hard. A simple google search will turn up lots of tutorials. Use 14 gauge galvanized steel and make rings about 1/2 inch in diameter and you can make an effective looking maille shirt in a week or two.

Also, you might be able to use aluminum air duct material to make some thin armor out of. If you need to add a dish to the material, cut a circle in the middle of a piece of wood and lightly use a mallet to add a curve to the material. Bend the edges over when you're finished so it looks thicker.
