Divx is an AVI codec right?

Post by Vamp »

Like Indeo, Cinepak etc... Therefore I can't use DivX 5.1 on MPEG?

When I Ctrl-M in Premiere to export my movie and select AVI as the file type and goto video settings and select DivxPro5.1 as my codec, the file will still come out as an AVI right? Just lower size and good quality?

I cant go to the Adobe MPEG Encoder and use DiVX on that right? Or use DIVx on a quicktime movie?

DivX = AVI codec so files encoded in Divx still = .AVI right?

No, MPEG is a codec in its own right, DivX is a codec in its own right. They work in different ways.

It's just confusing 'cus DivX uses the .AVI file name and MPEG has its own, namely .MPEG or .MPG

So how would I know whether I'm watching an AVI file or a DIVx file... When I select DIVX as my compressor when saving as an AVI that saves the file as an AVI but it's actually Divx?

ARGH! It's an AVI file, always... DivX is just the compression method.

Forget it, whatever you do, it'll be an AVI file unless you use MPEG.

Avi, mpeg, quicktime - all file types. Divx, indeo, cinepack - all compression formats. The compression format is a way to store the information in a file, not a file itself. So an avi file can be compressed with Divx.
