Ok in my next movie (which is a big school project feature lenght dealy) I have someone getting hit by a car...any ideas on how i could shoot that so that it will look real and no one will get hurt. One idea i had would be shoot from inside the car and put green screen behind the actors and just have them run up and hit themsleves on the car or hit it and get sucked under the car and then replace the green with road footage. Do you think that would work?
Hmm, you are in luck. I spent many, many hours doing this effect on my last movie. Weatch my last movie "Reverie" at www.nelsoentertainment.com\media\reverie_int.mov and see the hit in the final movie and you can also see the practice footage at www.nelsonentertainment.com\carhit.mov If you like the way it looks then I can tell you how we did it.
I've done this effect a couple years ago for a friend's film. However, I let myself get hit by a car to do it. Even though there was a lot of rehersal, I did almost got my hand run over during one take. I don't really reccomend my method.

The idea requires a lot of prep but it's very simple. First, you do have to get hit by a car, but very, very slowly at like 5-10 mph. The person needs to roll on to the top of the car then roll off it, in a safe manner, very slowly. Then, in post, you speed up the footage a bit at first, then a lot during the impact then less afterwards. Then, you need to multiply the sound many times over to get a good bone crunching THUD. Watch my scenes frame by frame and you can see the guys bracing, rolling the hood and then jumping off the hood feet first. But when I do lots of variable speed adjustments, it goes by so fast, combined with a great sound effect, it looks awesome.
Yeah, that's pretty much what I did except I land on my back instead of on my feet. I also let the car hit me head on, and I rolled off to the side.
I'd like to add that any time a stunt like that is performed, know where the closest hospital is, and if you don't have 911 in your area, have the number for the hospital or ambulance service on speed dial on your cell phone.
Accidents happen.

Thanks guys...i showed the actor the clip from ur movie and he loved it so much that he went home and practiced rolling on the hood of his car and pretednging to get hit lol
That's a great effect. I've always wanted to film something like that -- though with a slightly different method. Though yours seem much more realistic.
or... you could do the time honoured method of cuts.... have 1 shot of the car about to hit the person (doesntr have to be fast..) then goto a shot of the driver hitting the brakes... then one of the victim hitting the windsheild, then one of the tyres screeching... then the victim rolling off the back of the car
If you have the skill/time/money do a ragdoll in 3dsmax 6/7! Composite back to shot... Just a thought... Or run into the freeway and jump infront of a nice big 18-wheeler... Cool effect. Very realistic!
That scene sucked. There was NO realism whatsoever. (Apologies to the maker, but you gotta face the music dude.) I mean, why was there a straight cut to a guy rolling over a parked car, then a driver who laughed like an idiot?!
