I'm looking for a wireless mic under $200.
I saw Azden WMS-PRO and Sony WCS-999, prices are $150 and $100 accordingly.
However, while reading reviews I saw comments (separately) that each of them pretty much sucks. And that to get a decent wireless mic one would need to spend something in the ballpark of $600.
Now, my situation: I want a ok wireless mic, but nothing more than $200. However, I already have a Sony WCS-999, but it's still unopened and I "may" be able to still return it and get something else. Btw, I paid $150 for this mic, but apparently the prices have gone down now.
Thus, my question is: are there good mics under $200 that will do me better than Sony WCS-999 ? Or I may as well stay with Sony WCS-999, as the difference between it and a $200 mic will not be worth the effort of me going through the hassles of returning the mic to the store and getting a new one ?

RE: Budget wireless microphone
What is the importance of the mic being wireless? Is this just a preference? Or a requirement?
Erm... yeah...
RE: Budget wireless microphone
not a requirement.
I had a problem of background noise when I filmed actors in a noisy hall somewhere. So I thought that if I put a wireless mic on them, I'll get two benefits: I will hear them much better without background noise and there won't be any wires sticking out from the actors.
If there is a better alternative then maybe I don't need a wireless mic at all.

Here are some suggestions from our staff here at MF, they buy them and work with them allday so they have a pretty good idea of what lasts.

I was actually looking for a lapel mic. I wanted a wireless version, so that cords won't be sticking out of the actors.
Now, hey.. I managed to return the microphone for the store credit, so now I'm "free".
Thus, question: do I really need a wireless lapel microphone ?
What do you do when you want to record sound from an actor ? A boom mic ?
But what if you can't control the surroundings around you, like the background noise ?

We use wireless lavs on our hosts for The Underground, the Sony is a decent mic for the price for occasional use and for most simple dialog work. The biggest trick is to run all your mics through a mixer before the camera, much easier to balance the mics from the board than from individual volume controls. Also the mixer will probably give you a line level votage at teh input, which will eliminate some of the noise and hiss commonly found when using mic level inputs.
