Artificial camera shake

Post by Magic-Man »

Yo, could somebody tell me how to get a real good camera shake, without shaking the camera. I was thinking of zooming in on the footage (in premiere) a tad, then keyframe the footage to go from side to side, up to down in a space of a few frames and put on motion blur slightly. I am too lazy to try it now but anyone think that will work or have any other suggestions? Cheers

If you have AE pro, then use the wiggler to generate the keyframes. If not, then yeah, thats how to do it.

I wouldnt use wiggler it generates random keyframes. Ideally what you would do is film a wall hand held with some X's on it track the motion of that footage and apply it to the other footage. If the frame just jumps around randomly it wont look convincing at all. where as using motion from an actual hand held shot will be ideal

I'd do that if I needed the camera shake to be really intense, but if I want a light rumble, then the wiggler is the way. Also somewhere I remember seeing an expression someone wrote to generate the shake too.

yes but your missing the concept... a light shake will still need the movment of handheld or else it will look like the frame has been randomly positioned which is what wiggler essentially does. Look at classic hand held dialogue scenes and notice that there is a swaying motion to hand held to give the viewer the feeling that they are in the scene watching it.

mmm, well i am not at all experienced in tracking. So your saying i should film a wall with some marks on it, ie X, then sort of shake the camera, then track that motion onto the footage i would want to shake? Do you think my idea is alright? I will give my idea a try soon and post it up, see how it works.

I have an camera shake animation preset for adobe after effects. You can tweak the settings to get the desired camera shake. If you want it let me know.

bullet effects, real simple just stock footage except the smoke, that was actually talcum powder. Aaron, Alove and wildstorm, what do you think of the camera shake?

I was watching the Extras DVD for Top Gun the other day and to make the shake shots for the ariel combat the simply attached a power drill to the front of the camera with an 8" off set wooden disc attached to the front, very simple and the effect is good, hope it helps.
