Alright, so my next film will be shot in 16:9, but I did a test and burned the disc, only to find that it was stretched back into the 4:3 aspect ratio. I know that it will bring it back to 16:9 on a 16:9 TV, but is there any way to burn the 16:9 look to be played on a 4:3 TV?
By 2006 this will no longer be an issue, as widescreen televisions will become a standard, but for the moment being...

What software are you using for encoding & authoring the DVD?

Can't you just "shrink" the picture into 4:3 format, and add some black bars? That way at least when you view ot on a wide-screen TV, it'll stretch out to the 16:9 format. How you'd add the bars, I have no idea.

To add black bars in premiere is easy, just add the clip plugin to your video & add top & bottom bars of 16 for 16x9 ratio or 21 for full letterbox ratio.

Ideally you should keep your movie anamorphic (so you don't lose resolution) and then use a DVD authoring package that lets you mark it as anamorphic on the DVD itself. That way when a DVD player hooked up to a 4:3 TV plays it, it will add the black bars for you. And when it plays on a 16:9 TV, it will be full glorious 16:9.

I'll be using Adobe Encore DVD. My friend will be getting it shortly, so we'll be able to see what all we can do for our 16:9 problem then...

Yeah, my friend got his a few days ago, and we filmed a short in 16:9 just to test out the capabilities of Encore, along with Premiere Pro.

Yeah, we're going to do audio commentary on our next few films, and possibly some old ones. Should be pretty fun.
