Using a setup similar to the model rocket ignitors, use a short (one centimeter or less) piece of fine steel wool in the place of the e-match. If it isn't igniting the firecrackers get some fire paste (a campfire starting aid that comes in toothpaste tubes) squeezed onto the wire.
