Hey I trying to figure out how to do an effect..

Post by Meade87 »

I am working on a new short, I am in the midst of storyboarding, and I want to try a special effect with it. I am asking now so I can know if I can do it before I start shooting. I want to film the short on Mini-Dv in color, but in post production I want to remove all the color and turn it into B&W but I want to allow only certain colors to stay in. I want to let all blues stay in and I want to change the color of a characters eyes to red, and let that be shown. Does anyone know how I would go about doing this? Thanks for your time.

I've been told to click on the eyes and key them in as a different color.

In After Effects, you can probably just desaturate each individual color, and bump up the saturation of the remaining color (in this case, blue) a little. This can probably be achieved in other similar programs as well, and should save you some time compared to that tutorial above.
Erm... yeah...

the tutorial above isn't too bulky because I think Im going to go for a halo effect of specific colors so its more of a transition within black and white and not completely the two extremes. More closer to Sin City than Shindler's List you know? so I don't think I will have to be bothered with too much masking, but I still need to figure out the changing a persons eye color.

well, I think I know what you mean. I use final cut and I can make an effect like that, simply by doing a three way color correction, desaturate the colors you want to be, for this example red, and the invert the correction. (this way, because desaturating every color besides the one you want to "show" would take a hell lot of time). In the same correction I would highlight the colors and apply a color balance to the shot.

Hm, I'm not to good with tuts, I think you should do the last thing I wrote first, and desature because if you color balance a B&W shot then the whole thing would change color :)
You could PM me if you wanna know how to do it in premiere :D
